About the Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce
The Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization made up of business and professional people sharing a common goal – the economic development of the Greater Charlottetown Area. The Chamber is the major voice of business on economic issues for its over 850 member businesses representing over 16,500 employees in the greater Charlottetown area. The Chamber’s members reflect a diverse network of small, medium and large businesses from almost every industry sector and business profession. Through volunteer service on the Chamber Board, a Chamber Committee, or a Task Force, members express their views, direct and shape the activities and programs of the Chamber. The Chamber is financed through membership dues and revenues earned through events, advertising and sponsorship investment.
The Chamber accomplishes collectively what no business can do alone. The Chamber’s primary role is to advocate on behalf of its membership on issues affecting business and the community. It represents its members on matters such as the provincial, federal and municipal budgets, economic development issues, infrastructure and transportation issues, and other areas that affect the members’ ability to grow and prosper.
The Chamber provides a variety of benefits to its members including access to the Canadian Chamber Group Insurance Plan, attractive credit and debit card discounts, assistance with exporting, and a variety of opportunities to promote one’s business.
Education is another key service provided by the Chamber. Recognizing the challenges faced by its members in providing timely, practical, and affordable training for staff, the Chamber offers a variety of workshops, seminars and other programs of interest to its members.
The Chamber is also committed to providing networking opportunities for its members to enable them to grow their businesses by making valuable contacts with other members of the business community. People do business with people.
History The Greater Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce began as the Charlottetown Board of Trade in 1887 and was formed on the request of Mayor Heath Haviland. The mayor asked merchants, traders and others to consider the formation of a Board of Trade so the commercial “men” of Charlottetown could participate in the International Congress of the Canadian and American Boards of Trade. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss commercial difficulties that existed between the two countries. Lewis Carvell was the first president of the board and 100 signatures were on the original certificate. One of the first activities of the new board was to investigate steam transportation between Charlottetown, Pugwash, Tatamagouche, Wallace, Pugwash, River John, and Baie Verte. His investigation was the start of a long succession of delegations, investigations, and studies into improving transportation and communication to and from Prince Edward Island. In 1970 the Board of Trade changed its name to the Greater Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce.
