Letter from the President – George Nelson

I would like to begin by thanking the PEI Chamber of Commerce for their accomplishments in the past year, thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of President Don Reid and Secretary – Treasurer, Mary MacDonald. We have been successful in introducing new initiatives for our region; the PEI Chambers of Commerce website being just one of them.

The Kensington & Area Chamber of Commerce has experienced many positive changes over the past several years. Due to the significant growth in membership we find ourselves at a cross road and recognize the need to expand our member’s services in order to sustain membership. The Board of Directors held a strategic planning session in March to examine the needs of our membership and make the necessary improvements.

It was decided to add various committees to our board that will include the following:

Summer Events Committee:
We have a very exciting summer ahead of us with four large events taking place. These events are: Tour de PEI, Cavendish Music Festival, Canada Games and the Annual Harvest Festival. These events have huge potential for businesses in Kensington and surrounding areas.
The purpose of this committee is to insure that our members have an equal opportunity to receive the financial rewards that these events will offer. The committee will suggest appropriate ways to market, promote and collaborate with our members leading up to and during these events.

Membership Committee:
The purpose of this committee is to promote membership in Kensington proper. Although membership has increased significantly; only 35 % of Town businesses are currently members. This is an area of concern. The committee will help identify the cause and work on ways to improve communication and the needs of this area. Town businesses are essential to a strong membership pool as they offer valuable resources and strengthen networking opportunities for everyone concerned.

Member’s Networking & Training Committee:
The purpose of this committee will be to evaluate and suggest ideas to improve networking and training opportunities for our members.

Business Awards Committee:
The purpose of this committee is to plan for and promote the BAE.

Government Affairs Committee:
This committee will be responsible for establishing the needs of the business community and make recommendations to government and other officials on their behalf.
This is an essential and important role for the Chamber.

In closing, I would like to express a special thank you to our members. Our desire is to serve and meet your needs throughout 2009.

Best Regards
George Nelson, President
